This week’s tip is a health tip on avoiding colds or curing a cold if you have got one – in a natural way.
I can’t remember the last time I actually had a cold. It was so long ago. The reason for that is that I was told about an essential oil, by an organic farmer, here in France, a number of years ago.
He said: “I never get flu.” (People talk about flu, and say they have flu when they really have a bad cold – not flu at all. Having said that, the essential oils are very good against flu too). He said that he used the essential oil, Ravensara. Ever since he told me about it, I’ve used it.
It’s that time of year – September, when the kids go back to school, through the autumn and the winter, each day ,putting a dab of Ravensara on my chest.
So, No Cold… Yay!
Sometimes, when I go to the pharmacy here in France, they give me Ravintsara, saying that that is what I am asking for, but they are not, in fact, the same. I did research and they are not the same, but they are both as effective.
At the moment, I have Ravintsara.
You either use it as a preventative or as a cure, if you get a cold. As a preventative, each morning, I put some on the tip of my finger and dab it on my chest. I get the girls to do it before they go off to school.
For children, you put one dab, or if they have a cold, two dabs.
For adults, you put two dabs or three dabs as a remedy.
So, that’s each morning through autumn and winter – no cold. It’s great – we are happier when we haven’t got the winter colds.
Second Tip
I also use it if I am taking a plane. Because in the plane cabin you’ve got the air circulating. I found that I used to get ill after plane journeys. So, I did an experiment and use Ravensara or Ravintsara each time I take a plane journey. It works!
I’ll go into the difference between the two below, if it is of interest to you. Firstly, for your convenience, you can find Ravensara Here and Ravintsara Here. Here are a couple of examples too, with the links to obtain them online.
It’s very often easier to order online than physically go to the pharmacy. At this time of year, I find that the pharmacies tend to run out of these essential oils. I guess a lot of people know about this little tip, here in the South of France. LOL
So, that’s this week’s tip. Next week, I’ll be sharing a remedy for the common cold with an everyday vegetable from the garden, or market, which is very effective too – and, of course, natural.
So, let’s avoid the colds. Be happier and get on with life in a better way.
(Little disclaimer I ought to share with you: I am not a medical doctor or a dietitian. I am not giving medical advice. I am sharing information, knowledge, experience, wisdom… I am not telling anyone what they should do. These tips are for educational / informational purposes. I am sharing.)
Voilà. If you try it out, let me know if it works for you.
The difference between Ravensara and Ravintsara
The difference is not that easy to decipher and there are differing views. There still remains confusion over whether they are the same thing or not. I won ’t go into lots of technical detail here. They are both effective against the common cold and flu, so for me, that is enough. Here follows a simple explanation I have extracted, (no pun intended), from what I have found on the subject.
Both of the essential oils are obtained from trees in the Lauraceae family. Ravintsara is extracted from the Cinnamomum camphora tree, growing in Madagasca, although not native to the island. It was introduced from China in the early nineteenth century. Apparently, in the Madagascan climate it became a chemotype which no longer produces camphor. The extract was given the name Ravintsara. That is my interpretation.
It seems that Ravensara aromatica is an aromatic tree also growing in Madagasca, but also native to Australia and Tasmania. So, as I see it, the essential oils are extracted from different trees and have different compositions, the details of which, I won’t go into (that was not the point of this blog post), and the oils are distilled differently.
